Changing how core samples are stored & protected
We focus on delivering smarter, tougher, and purpose-built solutions tailored to local field conditions. Every component in the Explora range is designed by a geologist with drillers in mind.

Our Story
From field challenges across three countries to precision-engineered solutions built for New Zealand conditions
The Problem
Years in the field
Joseph Whitmore spent years lifting, logging and photographing all types of core trays across New Zealand, Australia and Canada. As a former field geologist, he saw firsthand why alternative core trays from overseas never took hold here.
They weren't lacking durability - they were simply too large, too heavy, too expensive, and incompatible with the racks sites already owned.
Research
Auckland to Invercargill
Instead of writing off the problem, Joe dug in. He travelled the length of New Zealand, talking to drilling teams, consulting engineers, and core shed managers about what really mattered.
Safe lifting limits, quick drainage even with silty runoff, clear labelling prompts, and a tray footprint that wouldn't force expensive rack rebuilds.
Development
Engineering the Solution
Back in Wellington, Joe partnered with Uniplas' injection-moulding experts to engineer a solution that spoke the language of real drilling crews.
The result: Explora Core Trays built from recyclable polypropylene, matching the footprint of fluted trays but adding wide borders for photo-ready labelling, 'Start' prompts to eliminate orientation errors, and handles on all sides.
Field testing
Proven in Action
Every feature of Explora was born from field-tuned feedback. Crews testing prototypes praised how trays rolled smoothly in any rack orientation, how a single operator could lift one safely, and how the circular recycling programme made sustainability real.
By launch time, it wasn't just another import — it was a homegrown answer refined through thousands of hours in New Zealand's toughest drill sites.

"Core costs a fortune so why sink money into sheds when you can buy trays that protect the samples themselves? Explora trays are like having thousands of mini core sheds right in your core yard."
What makes Explora different?
At Broken Ground, we understand the importance of effective core sample management. Our solutions, designed by former field geologists, ensure optimal storage and preservation of geological samples. Experience the perfect blend of innovation and expertise tailored to your needs.

Plug and Play
The first rigid plastic core tray of its size, designed to match New Zealand's popular fluted board trays - no workflow disruption, no retrofitting.

Built to Endure
UV-resistant polypropylene and a secure-fit lid mean Explora trays are built for real-world weather and long-term storage without degrading.

NZ-Designed, field-tested
Created by local geologists and drillers to solve the exact frustrations they've faced - every handle, hole, and edge is intentional.
Built to last, Built to be reborn
Our trays aren't just built to last — they're built to be reborn. Through our local closed-loop recycling system, worn-out trays can be returned, recycled, and remade into new ones, keeping plastic out of landfills and in productive use.
We don't cut corners. All products are manufactured in New Zealand under strict ISO9001 quality controls, meeting the standards expected by engineers, drillers, and mine operators alike. It's how we deliver tools that work harder, last longer, and tread lighter.
